How to make a reading nook your children.
If you want your children to get serious about reading, you need to provide them with a dedicated space for them to read with their favorite books. The best way to make this happen is to create an inviting space for reading somewhere in your home. To help you get started, we’ve come up with some easy reading nook ideas that will foster their love of reading and help improve their skills and comprehension.
Purchase Physical Books
The first thing you should do when creating a reading nook is to purchase a supply of physical books for your kids. While Kindle and other digital versions work perfectly fine, children already stare at computers, phones, and tablets on a regular basis, so it’s a good idea to give their eyes a rest from the harsh screens. Plus, setting up bookshelves filled with their favorite stories makes the atmosphere come to life!
Find a Quiet Spot
If you can create a quiet space for your children, they’ll be much better off. This will allow them a better opportunity to concentrate on a novel or other type of book, in addition to potentially helping them develop their love of reading with fewer distractions. If you can’t designate a full room, then create a delightful reading corner that acts as a nook instead.
Project a Positive Atmosphere
Reading nooks for kids should always exude a positive atmosphere. This increases the likelihood that they will get excited about books and improve their reading skills. In addition to creating a space that celebrates reading, you must also provide positive reinforcement as your children reach new levels of reading comprehension. So, be sure to stop by and check in on them every once in a while, and let them see you relaxing with your own books whenever you can.
Provide Plenty of Lighting
It’s no secret that it’s a lot easier to read a book when you have ample lighting. Depending on the location of the reading area and the time of year, you may be able to create a cozy reading nook with the use of natural light. If this isn’t possible, you might want to upgrade your lighting fixtures or pick up a reading lamp, so your kids won’t be forced to strain their eyes.
Create a Comfortable Area
A nook should always be very comfortable for your children. You can make this happen in a variety of ways, whether it’s bringing in a soft, comfortable sofa or maybe even a bean bag chair that they can move around. If you can make the area comfortable, then your children are much more likely to read for a longer period of time.
Add a Wide Variety of Books
Kids usually choose modern books their classmates have talked about. Instead of falling into this trap, pick up a variety of different types of books, such as The Happy Hollisters, a classic mystery book series for kids written by Andrew E. Svenson. Additional books from in the mystery, science fiction, and adventure genres will teach them some life lessons and open them up to new experiences!
