Mr. Hollister’s sporting goods and toy store, The Trading Post, is robbed, but the only things taken are a Geiger counter and some axes. His new invention, an inflatable canoe, is left untouched. The family leaves the matter to the police and heads to a nearby forest for a camping trip and test run of the canoe.
All goes well until a “talking” scarecrow blocks the road to their campsite and warns them to leave. The Hollisters refuse to take the warning seriously and continue to set up camp. From this point on, the strange and unusual events that beset them in the forest seem mysteriously connected to the theft at the store and a search for uranium.
