Dear Mr. Svenson,

Yes, I am the Diane N. who at age 11 wrote to your grandfather, “Jerry West.” When I checked my mailbox and saw the return address of The Happy Hollisters, I had to take a second look to be sure. I do remember writing that card to your grandfather at the encouragement of my mother and the Children’s librarian. I was so pleased as a young reader to get a response.

I’d like to tell you something of my love of books. As soon as I learned to read, I would pick up the Portage Daily Register, our local newspaper, and try to read the news. Living a block away from the Zona Gale Library (the building now is a museum and a new library was built in another location), named after a local writer and prior home of same, I and my siblings spent many hours at that library. It was our home-away-from-home. The Children’s librarian, Mrs. Peterson, was the person who introduced me to The Happy Hollisters. She knew I would enjoy them. I helped in the Children’s Library during the summer months when they would have summer reading club. I was given the privilege of listening to the children report on the books they’d read and would sign off that they had read them. During my high school years, I worked as a Page in the Adult Library on the main floor. I worked closely with the Head Librarian, Mrs. Lois Price, even taking a correspondence course through the Madison Public Library with hopes of pursuing a career as a librarian. Although my life took a different turn, I continued my love of books. I enjoyed reading books to my daughter when young. Later, she pursued a career as a librarian, getting her Masters in Library Science at University of Wisconsin, Madison. She now works at the University of Wisconsin MERIT Library in Madison. She and her partner share their love of books with their daughter. Their home is overflowing with all manner of books. We gift books every Christmas, too!

I know I kept the letter that I received from your grandfather but over the years I must have misplaced it. That was 66 years ago now. I was glad that you made a copy of that letter so I can put it in my ‘memory box.’ Please forward to me the card that I sent. Make a copy for your archives if you would like.

Thank you for your persistence in finding me. I remember enjoying those mysteries with that little family. I’m still a fan of mysteries as well as history, political, other non-fiction or once in a while a relaxing, really good fiction book.

Sincerely,
Diane N.
